Renting a cabin for a winter weekend.

A fire, a view of snow and skis by the door: the cabin is half the point of a Norwegian winter. There are four ways to rent one, and they suit very different trips.

Four ways to rent

Resort and destination booking

The simplest route for a ski weekend: cabins and apartments on or near the slopes, often bundled with lift passes.

Each ski area has its own booking office or portal — Hafjell and Kvitfjell share one, and Trysil sells lodging together with lift passes and rental
Expect ski-in/ski-out cabins sleeping 6–10, apartments and hotels
In peak weeks many are rented by the week or in fixed short-week and long-weekend blocks

Private cabins from their owners

Most Norwegian cabins are privately owned, and many owners rent them out when they are not using them.

FINN.no is the main Norwegian marketplace; owners set a nightly price with higher rates for weekends, Christmas and the winter holiday
The big international booking sites list cabins and apartments in the same areas
Read the listing carefully: bed linen, firewood, final cleaning and winter road access are often extra or your own job

DNT trekking-association cabins

The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) runs hundreds of cabins. Three kinds matter, and they work very differently.

Staffed lodges: a host, served meals and showers; book ahead. Many mountain lodges close in midwinter and reopen for the winter holiday and Easter
Self-service cabins: unstaffed but stocked with food you pay for, plus duvets, firewood and gas
No-service cabins: the same, but you carry in all your food
Unstaffed cabins are opened with the DNT key, which only members can hold
In the Oslo forests every unstaffed cabin must be booked before you go, with at least one member in the party
Membership for 2026 is NOK 860 for an adult, with cheaper youth, senior and family rates

Simple public cabins via inatur

The state forest company and local landowners rent basic cabins through inatur.no — cabin life at its plainest.

Often no electricity or running water, and several need a ski or walk in
The cheapest way to have a whole cabin to yourselves
The same site sells fishing permits, including for ice fishing

What it costs

Option	Typical price	Price from
Simple public cabin via inatur (whole cabin)	NOK 400–800 per night	recent seasons
DNT staffed lodge, bed only, member	NOK 290–515 per person	2026
DNT staffed lodge, full board, member	NOK 1,095–1,315 per person	2026
DNT staffed lodge, full board, non-member	NOK 1,430–1,710 per person	2026
Resort apartment, winter-holiday week (Trysil)	from about NOK 15,000 per week	recent seasons

These are published examples, not quotes. Private cabins at the ski resorts vary too widely by size, location and week to give one honest figure — compare live listings for your dates.

The three peak periods, winter 2026/27

Christmas and New Year
About 19 December 2026 – 3 January 2027
The most expensive fortnight of the winter; often week-long rentals only.
Winter holiday, week 8
20–28 February 2027
School holiday for Oslo and Akershus. Week 9 is the holiday for other regions, so both weeks are busy.
Easter
20–29 March 2027
The classic Norwegian cabin holiday. Easter is early in 2027, which is good news for snow.

Booking tips

For the three peak periods, book as early as you can — six months or more ahead is normal for the best cabins
For an ordinary winter weekend, one to three months ahead is usually enough
Every Saturday from January to March is busy; a Sunday-to-Thursday stay is cheaper and quieter
Ask whether the road to the cabin is ploughed and where you park — some cabins are a ski or sledge-pull from the car
Check what is included: bed linen, towels, firewood, electricity and final cleaning are often charged separately
Race and World Cup weekends fill whole valleys; check the event calendar before you pick a date
