Tour skating · Akershus
Glide for kilometres across black ice on long-bladed skates.
When a cold spell arrives before the snow, lakes around Oslo freeze into clear black ice and Norwegians bring out their tour skates: long blades clipped to ski boots. On a good day you can cover many kilometres. Guided tours on Lake Langen, 20 minutes south of the city, supply the equipment and the ice knowledge.
Why it is a winter thing: It is only possible on clear ice formed in a cold, snow-free spell — often just a few weeks a winter.
December to February or March, and very variable. In mild or snowy winters the ice may never be skateable.
Half-day tour with skates, poles and safety equipment.

This works as a day trip from Oslo, so there is no need to stay over. If you want to turn it into a weekend, see how cabin rental works.
Never skate alone. Wear ice claws around your neck and carry a throw rope and dry clothes in a waterproof bag. Check the ice maps on varsom.no first — and for a first time, go with a guide.
